It's one of thoughts green plastic ones. its half crouched placed on the edge of the wall mounted speaker in the class room that my art history class is held in. the soldier is holding some kind of a rifle pointed at the outer speaker where maybe there was a second soldier. I spent most of my art history class contemplating this. The day went well but not super eventful, my drawing class like I guessed is going to be my most challenging class. As there is no review of information that I already know, its all new to me. The Art history class is really starting at the beginning, I mean the beginning of everything, like where humans evolved from and why we came out of trees and moved on to the rest of the world and then made cave paintings. this all put me in mind of a quote "Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans. " from the hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy. I got to use my AP Euro skills twice today, once in explaining the movement of the enlightenment briefly in art history and the fact that in English class I remembering the famous line of Descarte "Cogito ergo sum" or I think therefor I am. One of the reasons I could recall that was this you tube Video its very funny you should go back and watch all his stuff on philosophers if you have not seen them yet! Free Firday
Today I decided to blog outside. The weathers quite nice today not supper hot but not cold enough for a sweater. i would like to mention here that I cut my finger so i have a huge bandage around it so typing is a bit hard. I desided that today would be a gerat day to kind of do some bloging i have been meaning to talk about. One) I have told you no ones name or mentiond anyone drectley, this is for a reason I do not want to put them on a blog that they may not want to be on.
Two) if you dont know what school im at then you dont need to know.
Three) this is art college weard things happen and they are normal. i barley bat a eye when i see the girl down the hall with the legit mullet.
Four) why would someone do this? well its art college and sometimes they will sruge it off or give you a 30 minuet lecture on why they made something green as apposed to blue.
Notes on my day so far.
Met with Anna Rieke for coffee we went up into Berkley proper to a cool coffee shop that makes each cup through a drip system. Had a very excellent iced mocha. Drove through Berkley, and got to see her school up on the top of the huge hill, my ears popping on the drive up and down the hill.
Once i got back i met with a person about starting to get my accommodations for classes.
my Clipper card should be arriving in the mail shortly (they were out at every place it tried, thoughts darn college kids!) Thanks Jay, Kay, Evan and Elizabeth. I promises to use it for fun.
Hoping to make it to SF this weekend to explore a bit but we will see what happens.
P.S - People here seem to ether say, San Fransisco, or SF or downtown (if you say that on campus they assume you mean SF)
saw this little sculpture near my dorm today nestled in the bamboo, will now be on the lookout for more cool art projects stuck around.
Second wave of classes
I have now had all my classes at least once. Monday and Wednesday are my long days. I am in my classes from 8 to 5:30 with a little less then a hour and a half break for lunch, Its kind of random but one of my classes starts a 1:50 and ends at 2:50. My calender looks like this on wednesday 8:00 - 11:00 - drawing one (emphasis on measured drawing/Drafting)
I have a feeling that this is going to be my hardest class, also maybe my most interesting. the teacher seems to want to one, really get us good at Drawing, showing our ideas, boost our confidence, and give us the technical skills to achieve that. he also seems to feel very interested in how things can be persevered. I think it is also my smallest, with about 14 kids (Its tieing with my jewelry class witch has lost some people)
1:50 -2:50 - English One
I think I will switch out, as it looks very easy, also the whole class is music based witch is weird.
4:00-5;30 - Intro to the arts
Art history class, deals with early art mostly. looks very standard.
I don't have class on Friday. how great is that?
A note on today
I walked outside my Jewelry class this afternoon and found Brown footprints leading into the other classroom down the hall. Because the foot prints were leading back the way I was heading anyway I fallowed them they when on for more then a block and around two corners I eventuality had to stop fallowing as I had to turn off. I think it was mud, people kept looking at it fallowing it up a block and around a corner. I was going to fine a explanation, but shrugged it off with the thought that this is art college, witch kind of says everything you need to know.
oh here's the photo of the gecko I'm working on for jewelry.
Reflections on real first day
My day started when my roommates alarm clock when off sometime around 6:00 being a college student she struggled to turn it off and then rolled over and when back to bed. I was awake however but just decide to lay around until my alarm clock went off. then there was the rush to getting ready. My first class was Jewelry and Metal one. what a great one to start out on, I was one of two first years and to my surprise a good mix of girls and boys, we did a bunch of first day stuff, got lots of paper and then finally moved on to doing stuff, about half the rest of the class was taken up by learning how to put a blade in the small jewelry saw. These blades are tiny, not the smallest one but close. here's a photo comparing one of the blades to a pencil.
and then we were given a sheet of copper and told to cut the edge this is not as easy as it sounds cutting in a straight line with one of these is not super easy. I did ok however and here's a photo (you can see on the bottom how my blade was loose and so was way off)
4D=Time
my next class was 4D, or how I always called it in my head the tech class. Turns out 4D really means time and how time relates to everything (I think...) looks like it may take some warming up time but will most likely become really interesting. however we had this long desuction about all the things people have done with time and how that is viewed and some whee in there Stonehenge came up, witch got me thinking about the Eddie Izzard clip about Stonehenge so I when back to the dorm and watched that i am going to post it here. this may not be completely appropriate for the young children but I an a huge fan of him and he is always funny. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiFq_nk8pE0&feature=related]
Tomorrow I have three classes, measured drawing, English one, and intro to the arts (art theory and brief history) hoping these will be as good as the first two!
Raining in the Dorm
Our Mini fridge makes a sound at night that sounds like rain falling on a roof, sometime I wake up and think its raining for real. Sense the forecast looks sunny from here to forever it looks like its the closed I will come to rain for some time...
How "Creatives" work
Here at school I have found a new word. Its "Creatives", as in " as Creatives we think differently from normal people" (one of the speakers said this over and over) not sure how I feel about this...
we had several talks about how artists work and how we as "Creatives" do this too. People would throw out what works for them, and guess what for everyone it was different and most of it was contradictory. So at the end of the day turns out cuz' we are "Creatives" we all think differently not only from everyone else but also from each outer. Big shock, i could have told you that without sitting through the hour long lecture.
Something I am glad to know is that I am so happy that Orientation is over, officially over no more name games, random facts about the school, or long talks from anyone the admins can think of.
I'm not saying it was not helpful, it was. All my questions were answered, even the questions I don't know I had. We did some cool stuff like the alum talk, we had four people coming one was a glass artist, one was a guy working for Pixar (he graduated last year) he worked on Cars 2 and Toy Story 3. One was a photographer, her art was a bit wear for me but she has a really cool job where she travels around the world taking photos of restaurant and food. The last one was a Fashion major and now works for Levi's. A second cool thing we did was the taste of Oakland, I signed up and went to a Vegan Chinese restaurant. Sounds wear and things only got wearer when you open up the menu and find things like pork egg roles, and then next to it in small red print "meat substitute"
The food was really good, I had noodles with peanut sauce and cucumbers. I tried some Chicken substitute and it was really no different then chicken.
All in all I am very glad that school will be starting soon. However i still have the weekend, so now i have to figure out what to do.
Lowdown on the Dorm.

Here it is. my Dorm. the place I will call home for the next nine mounts or so. My room is not bad really its big, well bigger then I thought and bigger then the ones in the outer dorm building. I shard a bathroom with the two girls in the next room so only four people, however I share a kitchen with 35 or so other people. and as there is not meal plan this can get a bit crazy. I have one Roommate, she is from Shanghai she's very nice and its really interesting living with her and the cultural differences that come up, like where I would just have sweeped the dorm floor she mops it, I'm going to bet that we have the cleanest floor in the dorm.
Dorm life is very much like I expected. its rare for it to be completely quiet except in the middle of the day. people do weird stuff for laughs and they try to make weird semi-etable food with whatever they can find. so far its been fun and fine the only time when it was taken to far was the third night where some people desired to talk in the hall until two in the morning. I did not want to be the one to break it up as i did not want to be the fun hating person who told them all to shut up and go to bed but a two i was too tired to care and when out and told them anyway. so whall i understand the having the dorm room experience is great, i am so getting a apartment next year.
Third day of orientation
Mattresses pad = success
Earplugs = most amazing things ever even if they fell out half way throughr the night
Im now in my way to the third day of orientation. Today we r in san fransicso at the secoumd campus the shuttle takes about 20 minutes its faster then BART witch has to takes all these stops. My fellow students are all interesting for excample a girl sitting two seers in front of me is wearing a straw hat, boots, and a big plastic watch in the shape of a star like the kind you used to get in a cereal boo it sounds like it would look super odd but in it kind of works.
Greating from Calafornia
Hi everyone - Its me Katie. well duh its my blog. I have decided to keep a blog about what is going on in my day to day new college life. I am doing this for several reasons
1) cuz' I'm lazy and don't want to send out individual e-mail to everyone (i will still call don't worry mom) and if your not great at facebook most of you guys can handle a blog.
2) it will be a way to record my fist year at college, I suck at keeping a journal lets see if I will be better at keeping a Blog...
3) So lots of you know that I'm Dyslexic, and i find that writing as often as possible that keeps my spelling and punctuation skills nice and shiny.
4) i know there are more reasons but i can't think of them at this time.
Post soon to come about orientation week, the dorm room, saying good-bye to my parents and all that good first week stuff!
