Intresting bitsover the past week

So far into college life I have discover a few new things about me and college in general they are as fallows 1. I really really really hate cooking in a public kitchen, you can heat something up or make something really simple like pasta but anything else is kind of imposable and takes way more planing then it should.

2. I had  a really good art history education

3. I am one of thought weird people who is not constley dootling and does not values there skechbook over there life

4. In fact I have come to despise my sketch books (that's right I have three now + the one I am assumed to just have and keep on my own)

5. the suplys lists they give you - and the books on them - are not always needed, and more suggestions, except for the things you really do need

6. Art supply's is expensive - and I am sure Blick's is only alive because of us (they are less then a block away and are the only art store in the area)

7. Seattle weather is exciting. Bay weather (so far) is boring

8. I hate mini fridges

9. Tracing paper is about the most useful thing ever invented

10. And I am even more in the minority of people here who seen to like to read - you know for fun.

Its Wednesday so we have hit that mid-week push to get everything done for your last days of class before the weekend. I'm off to my last class of the day - Art history- then i am going to go back to my dorm, eat a apple, draw some sketches, hammer down my idea for my jewelry project for the second time and then get all the info i am going to need tomorrow when I make my info graphic for my 4D class on Friday. Zap some dinner and watch Hulu, until the dorms calmed down enough to the point where my ear plugs will block out the noise.

My jewelry teacher wants to see really refined designed for projects, she nixed my first design for this project saying she could not see how it would fit together and that it was too much trouble - it was rather delicate but I like it and plan to make something like it anyway just later. she then told me to make a belt buckle - i said not and started working on a nightlight that I am hoping i will be able to stick to, I will take more about it later when theres more to show.

My new 4D class is great, I could tell after i had been in the class ten minuets it was better, way more interesting.

someone has put a second plastic solder on the speaker in my History class.

my now full friday

I just moved into a new class, switching from one 4D teacher to a second 4D teacher. It was the right move I could tell the moment the class really got started. today we had a great preview on using Adobe illustrator its quite interesting, and a bit odd because I'm used to Photoshop its kind of a cross between that and paint. however having a class that goes on for six hours is really long, so when class gets out we are all ready to leave. after that i did some shopping and Skype with a freaind. kind of reasitn up because i have tons of homework and stuff to do over the weekend. in outer news there seems to have been a rash of bike stealing on campus in our dorm allow there have been seven people who's bikes have been stolen. My bike is fine plus I have two locks witch is a discouragement, that was a great tip! a few of the boys in the dorm.were thinking about setting up a stake out, but that plan probable died because who wants to sit out in the dark?

Finnishing one project now on to the next exciting project!

In jewelry today, we have been working on samples, mostly to get us familiar with the basic techniques, such as sawing, filing sanding, texturing (if you want) and polishing. My gecko turned out very nice, here's a photo In real life its shiner. I textured it with a very nice little line hammer, and it came out quite well. Our next project looks really cool, it must have at least three layers of mettle, be larger then two inches across, and have at least one layer that has been pounded out in a form, and must all be held together by rivets. This can be anything you want she suggests a belt buckle, Bracelet, night light, botch or a pendent. Right now I am leaning towards a night light or bracelet.  In case you cant really pitcher this here's a photo of one of the examples she gave us. So this is a night light not quite finished. She used two kinds of metal, the back two layers are copper, she just treated them with different finishes. the cat is rounded out and made of silver.  The holes on the edges are where the rivets go, and she plans to put a thin sheet of glass behind. I am quite excited to start working, I need to have a working idea on paper by the time I go in on Thursday. On outer notes I am going to switch to a different 4D class, same focus different teacher and day. The teacher I have now is a jerk, and the student teacher annoys me, spending a whole semester with this guy would be really hard. I will have to give up my free Friday, but will have one class on Tuesdays and Thursdays so its a triad off. For a better teacher and smaller class it's worth it.

in my drawing class tomorrow I have five drawings due, in five different styles so I better get moving on that.

And a fire in the Dorm...

As I was writing that last post a low droning started in the hall it was not super loud but it kept going for a few seconds got me a bit worried. my roommate, having just got out of the shower gave me a questing look. I poked my head out my door. The hall was smokey, and all of it was coming from the kitchen. there was a group of people in the hall and since none of them seemed to be panicking and I had a headache I shut the door and when back to my computer. However the fire alarm kept going so i got up for a second time and this time seeing people leaving I did to mostly because of the noise. there was a group of kids including our RA already out there, he was calling houseing apparently the fire had been put out almost at once by said RA. The alarm when on for several minuets before they came and shut it off, the only damage seems to be a fry pan and the hall way will smell like smoke but at least the noise has stopped.

There's a sholdier on the speaker

It's one of thoughts green plastic ones. its half crouched placed on the edge of the wall mounted speaker in the class room that my art history class is held in. the soldier is holding some kind of a rifle pointed at the outer speaker where maybe there was a second soldier. I spent most of my art history class contemplating this. The day went well but not super eventful, my drawing class like I guessed is going to be my most challenging class. As there is no review of information that I already know, its all new to me. The Art history class is really starting at the beginning, I mean the beginning of everything, like where humans evolved from and why we came out of trees and moved on to the rest of the world and then made cave paintings. this all put me in mind of a quote  "Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans. " from the hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy. I got to use my AP Euro skills twice today, once in explaining the movement of the enlightenment briefly in art history and the fact that in English class I remembering the famous line of Descarte "Cogito ergo sum" or I think therefor I am. One of the reasons I could recall that was this you tube Video its very funny you should go back and watch all his stuff on philosophers if you have not seen them yet! Free Firday

Today I decided to blog outside. The weathers quite nice today not supper hot but not cold enough for a sweater. i would like to mention here that I cut my finger so i have a huge bandage around it so typing is a bit hard. I desided that today would be a gerat day to kind of do some bloging i have been meaning to talk about. One) I have told you no ones name or mentiond anyone drectley, this is for a reason I do not want to put them on a blog that they may not want to be on.

Two) if you dont know what school im at then you dont need to know.

Three) this is art college weard things happen and they are normal. i barley bat a eye when i see the girl down the hall with the legit mullet.

Four) why would someone do this? well its art college and sometimes they will sruge it off or give you a 30 minuet lecture on why they made something green as apposed to blue.

Notes on my day so far.

Met with Anna Rieke for coffee we went up into Berkley proper to a cool coffee shop that makes each cup through a drip system. Had a very excellent iced mocha. Drove through Berkley, and got to see her school up on the top of the huge hill, my ears popping on the drive up and down the hill.

Once i got back i met with a person about starting to get my accommodations for classes.

my Clipper card should be arriving in the mail shortly (they were out at every place it tried, thoughts darn college kids!) Thanks Jay, Kay, Evan and Elizabeth. I promises to use it for fun.

Hoping to make it to SF this weekend to explore a bit but we will see what happens.

P.S - People here seem to ether say, San Fransisco, or SF or downtown (if you say that on campus they assume you mean SF)

Cool Photo of the day:

saw this little sculpture near my dorm today nestled in the bamboo, will now be on the lookout for more cool art projects stuck around.

Second wave of classes

I have now had all my classes at least once. Monday and Wednesday are my long days. I am in my classes from 8 to 5:30 with a little less then a hour and a half break for lunch, Its kind of random but one of my classes starts a 1:50 and ends at 2:50. My calender looks like this on wednesday 8:00 - 11:00 - drawing one (emphasis on measured drawing/Drafting)

I have a feeling that this is going to be my hardest class, also maybe my most interesting. the teacher seems to want to one, really get us good at Drawing, showing our ideas, boost our confidence, and give us the technical skills to achieve that. he also seems to feel very interested in how things can be persevered. I think it is also my smallest, with about 14 kids (Its tieing with my jewelry class witch has lost some people)

1:50 -2:50 - English One

I think I will switch out, as it looks very easy, also the whole class is music based witch is weird.

4:00-5;30 - Intro to the arts

Art history class, deals with early art mostly. looks very standard.

I don't have class on Friday. how great is that?

A note on today

I walked outside my Jewelry class this afternoon and found Brown footprints leading into the other classroom down the hall. Because the foot prints were leading back the way I was heading anyway I fallowed them they when on for more then a block and around two corners I eventuality had to stop fallowing as I had to turn off. I think it was mud, people kept looking at it fallowing it up a block and around a corner. I was going to fine a explanation, but shrugged it off with the thought that this is art college, witch kind of says everything you need to know.

oh here's the photo of the gecko I'm working on for jewelry.

Reflections on real first day

My day started when my roommates alarm clock when off sometime around 6:00 being a college student she struggled to turn it off and then rolled over and when back to bed. I was awake however but just decide to lay around until my alarm clock went off. then there was the rush to getting ready. My first class was Jewelry and Metal one. what a great one to start out on, I was one of two first years and to my surprise a good mix of girls and boys, we did a bunch of first day stuff, got lots of paper and then finally moved on to doing stuff, about half the rest of the class was taken up by learning how to put a blade in the small jewelry saw. These blades are tiny, not the smallest one but close. here's a photo comparing one of the blades to a pencil.   and then we were given a sheet of copper and told to cut the edge this is not as easy as it sounds cutting in a straight line with one of these is not super easy. I did ok however and here's a photo (you can see on the bottom how my blade was loose and so was way off)

4D=Time

my next class was 4D, or how I always called it in my head the tech class. Turns out 4D really means time and how time relates to everything (I think...) looks like it may take some warming up time but will most likely become really interesting. however we had this long desuction about all the things people have done with time and how that is viewed and some whee in there Stonehenge came up, witch got me thinking about the Eddie Izzard clip about Stonehenge so I when back to the dorm and watched that i am going to post it here. this may not be completely appropriate for the young children but I an a huge fan of him and he is always funny.    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiFq_nk8pE0&feature=related]

Tomorrow I have three classes, measured drawing, English one, and intro to the arts (art theory and brief history) hoping these will be as good as the first two!
